How giving gives back
Published on: June 19, 2024

The natural inclination from birth is your own comfort and satisfaction. Mine is a common toddler word. Choose instead the supernatural inclination where the Golden Rule reigns and giving gives back to you in abundance. It seems oxymoronic but it’s true: Give to others and you give to yourself. If you think it’s self-preservation to keep things for yourself and you wonder how giving can bring wonderful benefits, here’s 4 ways:

Golden Rule

You may think you are too weak to treat others with forgiveness, kindness or love. But really you can have the same power living in you that raised Jesus from the dead (See Romans 8:11). It’s not your own effort or power, pray for God to do it through you. “However you wish to be treated by others is how you should treat everyone else” (Luke 6:31 TPT). Fill yourself with God’s Word and His thoughts will flow from you without even thinking twice. It will become your nature. You can do something wonderful for someone: when they curse you, bless them: when they mistreat you, pray for them; when they take from you, give to them.  That’s why the Golden Rule is golden!

Greatest Commandment

When you respect, honor and love God above all, you realize you are respected and loved. Your identity is a son or daughter of the most high God. Then you realize you are full of worth, not worthless. You will overflow with respect and love for others, yourself and God. Jesus was asked what was the greatest commandment, He replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment…. And the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself”(Matthew 22:36-39 NIV).

“Give generously and generous gifts will be given back to you, shaken down to make room for more….Your measurement of generosity becomes the measure of your return” (Luke 6: 38 TPT). How do you give generously when human nature says give to yourself? Choose to listen to your spiritual nature where God gives a life of value and virtue where you are so blessed that your measurement is beyond measure.

To live in an attitude of gratitude is to find joy and peace. You will want to share this with others. You can change the landscape of your brain by thoughts that lead to the positive which positively effect your mind and health. To live in the negative paths entrenches negative thoughts and energy such as unforgiveness, anger or hate. These can lead to behavior or health issues such as cardiovascular disease or depression (See Dr. Caroline Leaf’s book “Switch On Your Brain” p. 74).

You can enter into God’s presence with the password of praise. If you don’t feel thankful, take a step of faith, one foot in front of the other. Praise will cause you to stand strong and have a firm foundation of strength through trials .

Teach your young person by example. Teach them to memorize God’s Word and it will go with them always and give them the power to have peace and happiness despite any situation or decision. Bless His Holy name and you will be blessed to be a blessing (See Psalm 100:4).

These thoughts of sharing and the blessing that results, started with my grandson who did not want to share. The peace provided by being generous is provided for all of us by the Giver of life who gives all good things. To follow the Golden Rule is to follow Jesus and His teaching which leads to goodness and mercy following you all the days of your life ( Psalm 23).

Love, Debbie
